Meet the neighbours

Yesterday was a “lunar auspicious” time for planting spring onions and carrots. More importantly, the weather was dry so I sowed a line of lettuce while I was at it, figuring they couldn’t be any worse than the last lot.

As tempted as I was to reward myself with a quick catnap in the hammock, I decided instead to make a start on weeding the alpines. Unfortunately, the bed is just below a bird box that is currently occupied. The chicks kept sticking their tiny heads out – they must be nearly ready to fly the nest – and making such a racket that at first I was concerned I may be deterring their parents from returning with food. A good excuse for giving up the weeding and leaving them in peace but actually mum and dad weren’t in the slightest bit bothered about my presence; they just couldn’t keep up with juniors’ demands.
